A practical morning checklist for reading participation, leadership and risk before reacting to the index.

Market breadth: the signal beneath the headline index

The headline index can look calm even while the market underneath it is changing. Breadth helps us see whether a move is supported by many stocks or carried by only a handful of heavyweights.

Start with participation. Compare advancing and declining stocks, then note whether the balance is improving or weakening through the session. One reading is only a snapshot; the direction of travel often matters more.

Next, study leadership. A healthy move usually has support from more than one sector. If the index rises while most sectors and mid-cap shares lag, conviction may be narrower than the headline suggests.

Finally, connect breadth to risk—not prediction. Strong breadth does not guarantee another rally, and weak breadth does not force an immediate fall. Use it to decide how selective to be, where invalidation belongs and whether position size should be reduced.
